Men’s Health: The Stats aren’t Pretty!

Men’s Health: The Stats aren’t Pretty!

Each year, Men’s Health Week provides a reality check on the state of Canadian Men’s Health. We think of ourselves as a healthy nation, but the stats say otherwise. Men live 4 years less than women and run a higher risk of developing both type 2 diabetes and heart disease. It sounds pretty dire – but early detection and relatively small lifestyle changes can have a huge impact.

Diabetes can sneak up on you

It is estimated that 90% of those who have pre-diabetes don’t actually know it yet. 1 in 3 Canadians already has pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. The early warning signs are so subtle that most people don’t notice. Thankfully, over half these cases can be reversed if caught early.

Heart disease can be silent but deadly

Heart disease is the second leading cause of death in Canada, after cancer. It affects 1 in 12 Canadians. Again, the risks are silent, but the majority of heart disease can be prevented.

70% is down to lifestyle

For most chronic diseases afflicting Canadian men, genetics plays a relatively small part. 70% is down to lifestyle. Early detection of conditions such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular issues, combined with changes to diet and lifestyle can reverse and prevent disease.

You don’t have to change much

Let’s be realistic. Most of us don’t really want to change our lifestyles. We don’t want to give up the beers – and we don’t all want to run marathons or munch salads. Most of us need a wake-up call to push us into action. The good news is that you don’t have to make drastic changes. Relatively small changes to nutrition, activity, sleep and smoking and drinking habits, can make a big difference. Canadian Men’s Health Foundation has a lot of practical suggestions.

Are you at risk?

Since the warning signs are silent, you won’t know unless you get tested. Molecular You specializes in early detection, by looking at a vast range of biomarkers to see exactly what is going on in your body today and what your future health risks might be. Then, we design a unique action plan, to help you stay healthy. All from a single blood sample.

Take control

Know your risks. Make small changes. Get started today.

Supporting Men’s Health
